Baked & Wired

One of our last days in D.C. this summer, the Bera interns had a farewell dinner. Precluding this dinner, Sam (professional Obama impersonator and fellow Bera intern) and I had some time to kill. I was telling him about my hatred for Georgetown Cupcakes, and how Baked & Wired is clearly superior. So, we decided to get one cupcake at each joint and compare. Though we appreciated both cupcakes Baked & Wired was the clear winner (and always will be).

Baked & Wired is a cupcake/dessert shop off of M St in the shopping district of Georgetown. It is located right off of the historic canal area, and is brightly decorated. Many times, there is a trademark line down the corner, with everyone holding the cupcake menu and deciding which one of the many fun flavors they would try that visit.

I first discovered Baked & Wired on a trip to D.C. in high school. We were at a weekend conference close to the area, and stopped by the shop on our first day. Safe to say, we got addicted. During a 4 day period, we had cupcakes 4 times. We even took some to the airport – a very different sort of airport goodbye.

This joint really does a non-traditional spin on their food, from the marketing to the actual cupcakes themselves. There’s a very playful and silly vibe to their products, they feature a granola mix called “Hippie Crack,” and a blue frosted cupcake with sprinkles called “Uniporn and Rainho.” They also have some over great flavors, like a Dirty Chai, Elvis Impersonator (peanut butter and banana), and many different variations of chocolate. I just love the vibe in here, its so down to earth and playful, unlike a lot of pink and prissy cupcake places.

The cupcake is tall in a vase-shape, small at the base and wide at the top. The volume of cake to frosting is really well thought out – neither overpowers the other. My favorite is the Razmanian devil: its a lemon cake filled with raspberry jam topped with lemon buttercream. I love this flavor, its a great mix of sweet and tangy.

Baked & Wired also does a mean ice cream sandwich. They’re big and a tad expensive (6$ a pop) but on a hot DC summer’s day, they’re totally worth it. Many ice cream sandwiches can be difficult to eat, if the cookie is too hard or the ice cream is rock solid. This place has the formula down pat. The cookie is chewy, the ice cream is fresh and flavorful, and my teeth never hurt eating them. My favorite flavor is Boy Blue, vanilla ice cream with a blueberry swirl between oatmeal raisin cookies.

mmmm. ice cream sandwich.

A cupcake plus tax ends up being a tad over 4$, which is relatively the same price as area cupcake shops. I think its worth it, the ambiance is quirky, the flavors are creative, and the quality of the cupcake is incredibly good. Its fluffy, sweet, and you can tell its well-made.

The Bottom Line

A wonderful Georgetown spot for cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches, and all the other sweet treats!
