Look y’all – I am not going to wade into any sort of “best pizza” debate. Anyone from New York, New Haven, New Jersey (or literally anywhere else) has strong opinions about their pizza being the best – and Washington, D.C. pizza being far inferior. That is totally fine! But for those of us who don’t get to leave the beltway need some options here in DC. Enter 2 Amy’s!

2 Amy’s is consistently rated as one of best restaurants in the city by the Washingtonian magazine’s Top 100 Best Restaurants list. Located in Tenleytown near American University, the spot is very family friendly, big friend group friendly, and date friendly, with plenty of indoor space for seating plus a cute little patio with tents and string lights.

The menu features appetizers, salads, pizzas, desserts, and wine + beer. To get a sample of everything on the menu, my friend Linnea and I had an appetizer, a pizza, and a desert – truly the best way to experience a restaurant!

To start off, Linnea and I had the risotto balls. Now. I know many of y’all feel an allegiance to the (now defunct) Taylor Gourmet in the risotto ball department. I am here to tell you that these are light years better. Perfectly hot and crispy outside, creamy tomato-y inside, with some real buffalo mozzarella in the center. They are actually flavorful, and not dry in the slightest. I would come back for these alone!

For our pizza, we had the Pozzouli with hot peppers (only on my half!). A Neapolitan pizza with tomato sauce, cheese, sausage, bell peppers, and hot peppers. While it was a little heavy on the sausage for my liking, the crust was thin and chewy – just the right amount of chewy. It was also the perfect size to split between two people, especially after we had already indulged in the risotto balls.

We truly couldn’t decide for dessert – stuck between the rum baba (a liquor soaked cake) the foggy señor, or the almond cake. After some sage advice from our waiter, we went with the almond cake. A large slice topped with cherry compote and a scoop of homemade ice cream on the side – it was a perfect balance of sweet, nutty, and tart.

This is a wonderful restaurant and it has earned a spot in the best restaurants of D.C. Its not pretentious, its homey, and its genuinely delicious food. Though it is tucked away in the corner of D.C., I highly recommend!
