Coming back to the blog and coming back to Adams Morgan! I’ve been posting some of my shorter food trips on my new instagram (@ad.itieats) but we’re back on the blog now! A few weeks ago, we went to Tryst for a friendsgiving brunch.
Tryst is a coffee shop + bar + restaurant in Adams Morgan. They feature a full menu of coffee drinks, cocktails, desserts and bakery items. The vibe is seat yourself, on a variety of tables and couches. Some people come to work (when they turn on the wifi) and other come for a meal and a chat.
I had tried Tryst a few times in the past with mixed results. Once I visited on a weekend to do some work – only to purchase a drink and discover they intentionally shut off the wifi on the weekend. On my birthday a few years ago, I shared the vegetarian nachos with a friend – both of us ended up sick the next morning. Not great – but this visit was definitely better!

We started off with coffee – which was cutely served with an animal cracker on the side. Next we had a spinach and artichoke dip with homemade potato chips. Now, I think this is one of the best appetizers ever, and this dip was good, but the ratio of chips to dip was kind of off.

For our meals, Emma got a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a Bullfrog Bagel, Jolyn got the Death by Chocolate Waffle, and I got the Fawaffel. The fawaffel was a chickpea-based batter topped with labneh, za’atar, and cucumbers+tomatoes. I am a huge fan of labneh – but there was a lot about this dish that just, wasn’t enough. The fawaffel was dry and needed some sort of syrup-style condiment, because i found it hard to finish. Overall – good ideas but mediocre execution.

I like the layout / concept of the restaurant, being casual with many types of seating. However, the service was running thing and it took us a while to get a waitress to help us out. I have yet to try the bakery items and desserts here – which they are known for, but overall this restaurant hasn’t been very impressive.

The Bottom Line
A decent spot for a snack and a drink – versatile vibe.
