D.C. seems to be getting new ice cream spots left and right, and you bet I’m here for it! This past weekend I tried Bôn Matcha near George Washington University and Foggy Bottom.
Started in 2017, Bôn Matcha has a little storefront across from James Monroe park. David Bae, the owner, is taking a year off from being a pastor in New York. He noticed that D.C. was lacking a matcha-focused spot, so they opened up the ice cream window.

They sell a few Matcha drinks, including a latte, colada, limeade – all made with ceremonial grade Matcha. Not sure what that means, but sounds fancy to me! A matcha espresso and a matcha affogato will be their next additions to the menu!
Bôn Matcha has and two flavors of soft serve ice cream, Matcha and a seasonal. The summer flavor was honeydew melon. There are two sizes, a small for 4.25 and a large for 5.25, with an extra 50 cents for a cone. A little pricey for a small – but ceremonial grade matcha is expensive I’m sure.

The ice cream itself was fantastic. I had a swirl of the two flavors in a cone – this is truly one of the most beautiful cones of ice cream my humble iPhone camera has laid its lens on. While I’m usually not a huge fan of soft serve, a both the matcha and the honeydew were much better in soft serve form than traditional churned, high butterfat forms.
The Bottom Line
Delicious and instagrammable. What more do you want?
