As a self-proclaimed ice cream *queen* I do love when I get to try a new ice cream spot. Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream opened in D.C. at the beginning of July, and my friend Adrienne (a fellow Ice Cream queen) and I went to check it out!
Mt. Desert Island is a favorite in its home state of Maine, where it all began. Started by a software developer who was making ice cream on the side, Mt. Desert Island makes small-batch “artisanal” ice cream without being pretentious. After being open for a few years, Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama visited the shop, which put them on the map.
Adrienne is a tried-and-true Mainer, and was super excited when MDIIC announced their new store in Mt. Pleasant. The shop is in a small rowhouse, with a little space along the walls to sit. They have a variety of creative flavors, which is something I prioritize in an ice cream shop.
My only reservation about this place are the prices. A single scoop is $5.40, a double is $5.95, and a triple is $6.45. Seeing as I wanted to try a few flavors, I decided to go with a flight for $8. I went with Kulfi (a traditional indian sweet), thai chili, cookies and cream, and blueberry sour cream. Honestly, all of the flavors were fantastic. Blueberry sour cream had Maine blueberries and chunks of pie crust (“Maine summer in a cup!”), the thai chili had peanuts and was *actually* spicy, and the cookies and cream was one of the best I’ve ever had.
They have a fantastic selection of flavors with the thick, hand-churned, high-butterfat style that Jeni’s touts, with a more home-made small-town feel. As Adrienne says, you get a better bang for your buck with a larger size or a milkshake. While its definitely more expensive per size (by 2$) than Ice Cream Jubilee (my fav) – you’re definitely getting a different experience at Mt. Desert Ice Cream. Try it for yourself!
The Bottom Line
Fantastic, locally-sourced, homemade ice-cream. Love!
Price: $$ (For ice cream, 5-10$)
Location: Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood, Washington, D.C.
