Bob’s Donuts

I have a hierarchy of desserts. Obviously, ice cream ranks supreme, followed by cinnamon rolls, ~fancy~ desserts! like tiramisu, donuts, normal cake, brownies, then cookies. Besides the superiority of ice cream, the hierarchy is malleable, and sometimes I just crave a good donut! Bob’s Donuts opened recently in Blackstone, so me, Maddie, and Denae decided to try it out!

The Omaha donut scene has a lot of classics, Petit’s Pastry, Donut Stop, and some others I haven’t yet tried like Sweet Magnolias. Bob’s Donuts just popped up about two months ago, right across the street from Dante Pizzeria! It is also next to Early Bird, and I believe the two share the same ownership. Nonetheless, this was the place to be!

Full disclosure: this is by no means a full-service restaurant. It is a small donut and coffee shop that serves some food to go with three small tables – it really only seats about 7-8 people with some standing room. If you’re here for a quick bite or food to-go, this is the place for you. Their menu includes donuts, which include three prices: Classic ($2.20), House($2.80), and Bob’s Faves ($3.20). They also have donut holes for 75 cents and a giant donut for $10. Bob’s also sells coffee and espresso drinks along with food, including combinations of chicken sandwiches, chicken strips, tater tots.

chicken sandys, donuts, and a (weird) chicken and biscuit

I went for the Chicken Sandy plus cheese, and a plain glazed donut. The donut was a solid glazed donut, raised edges, glaze all around, layered dough on the inside. This was cooked well and fluffy! I particularly liked that it wasn’t oily and didn’t reek of grease! While I know it wasn’t healthy, I didn’t feel heavy or gross afterwards.

Denae had a the Coconut Donut (which I tried some of!) it was a good donut underneath with a nice coconut flavor, but wayyyy too many coconut flakes on top, which fell off in the bag, essentially wasted. I think they should have toasted the coconut for more flavor diversity. Maddie thought her chocolate donut was pretty average. More than anything, Denae’s favorite at Bob’s was the Mocha Cappucino. We haven’t seen a lot of shops do flavored cappucinos – and she absolutely loved hers.

we got hungry! glazed, chocolate, and coconut

Maddie and I think the real star of the show was the chicken. The Chicken Sandy was so cheap for a filling sandwich, small little buns with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and a giant piece of fried chicken. Mine was covered in buffalo sauce and Maddie’s was plain – either way it was a fantastic deal for $3.30! Really unbeatable. Denae had the Chicken Biscuit, which she did not care for. Sad!

the chicken is bigger than the bread!

Bob’s is a good start for an “Artisan Donut” place. But to be honest – i’m a little confused about their pricing. A Chicken sandwich is $2.80, but their most expensive donut is $3.20? I think most people will be checking this place out for the donuts, and $3.20 is pricey for the Omaha area if they’re serving a good (but not mind-blowing) donut. If a potential customer happens to try the chicken sandy, their frugal pockets will be impressed, but lowering their donut prices by 20-30 cents and raising their chicken prices to offset the costs would probably help them retain Midwest fiscally conservative customers in the long run.

Overall – I would recommend this place for a cheap sweet tooth fix or a quick and cheap brunch. Less than 6$ for a filling meal is awesome no matter what way you look at it! If you’ve tried Bob’s, let me know what you think in the comments!

The Bottom Line

Go for the chicken, and maybe get a donut. Extra half-cone for the low-low prices!
