Saddle Creek Breakfast Club

Greasy diner food? Nah, not for me. Not only do they make me feel icky for the rest of the day, but old-school diners rarely have good options for vegetarians, or much less, vegans. Saddle Creek Breakfast Club is trying to break through that scene with new-but-classic diner breaqkfast, “done properly,” according to Chef Chase Thomsen.

The location is really a beautiful building on the outside, with a bright neon acronym sign and food paneling. The building used to be a service station, then an auto-repair shop, and eventually became new grounds for the Breakfast Club location. It is a little hidden, sitting off the “peanut” intersection off of Radial Highway between Saddle Creek Road, Happy Hollow Blvd and N 50th St.

Emily and I got there around 11:00 AM, (after a failed attempt to get into Early Bird), and put our names down for an estimated 40 minute wait. Thankfully, it only ended up being 20 minutes. Thankfully, SCBC has retained most important part of the classic diner: free. coffee. This is a special blend from Amateur Coffee, a new coffee roasting company in Omaha. This is really good stuff, not some generic burnt stuff (cough, Sodexo). Nonetheless, Emily and I got super hyper after three cups, but it was so nice to sip on warm and flavorful coffee while we waited.

The menu is pretty decent, offering traditional breakfast items, a few lunch choices, and a special vegan section. A few choices for alcoholic drinks and coffee as well. It was hard to decide, not because there was too much choice but because they all looked so good! I ended up going for the Los Salsas De Maria (Chilaquiles) and Emily had the Cali Club Sandwich.

my chilaquiles and emily´s cali club

Typically, I have seen chilaquiles done with fried tortilla triangles or chips, topped with salsa, crema, avocados, and other fun things. At SBCB, they did a lightly fried whole tortilla with Mexican rice, avocado slices, two eggs, topped with queso fresco and salsas (verde and roja). While the tortilla was a little hard to cut because it was so soft, I loved the variation on this dish! The eggs were perfectly cooked and runny, the way I like it. I mean, look at this beautiful video of the egg!

I could have done with some more heat, so it was perfect that SBCB had a host of Crazy Gringa hot sauces! The Omaha-based family owned company makes a variety of sauces, and I topped my chilaquiles with Chili Lime – which was so perfect! Overall, this dish was fanastic, the perfect portion, great balance between flavors and temperatures, and absolutely beautiful!

Emily had the Cali Club, with a fried egg, bacon, avocado, chipotle cream cheese and cheddar on a croissant. she also had a side of hashbrowns. The hashbrowns were perfectly salted and really crispy (trust me, I tried them!) Oh, and she said it was the best breakfast sandwich she ever had. No big deal!

I love the vibe at this place. The service is fantastic and even the other customers were very friendly! The decor has classic vibes with the tiled walls and the Andy Warhol style portrait wall in the bathroom too. The prices are just right for the portion and the quality and has options to accommodate for all your friends, no matter their dietary restrictions. I will definitely be back to try their banana pancakes! If you’ve been here, leave your thoughts in the comments below!
