The Hoppy Taco

Guess who is back and reviewin’ in Omaha! This gal! Me, Sophie, and Lydia (the Untappd Beer Buddies) were looking for a new spot to try some beer and get some food, and we came across The Hoppy Taco. A relatively new joint in the heart of Dundee, specializing in craft beer and Mexican food, this place is a college student’s dream!

sign can be misleading. my friends (jack) came in and asked for the free beer promotion, which was unfortunately, nonexistent. beware!

The Hoppy Taco is located in the old space of Cask Republic on Underwood in Dundee, right smack next to eCreamery. We talked to the new owner, who described that the previous owner of Cask Republic wanted to operate to create and brew beer. Life got in the way, and this owner decided to open up a new concept restaurant and brew new beer on the side, specially crafted to pair well with Mexican food.

oh, how the light hits the beer!

This restaurant has about 30 beers on tap, filled with craft beer from local and national breweries, featuring a menu powered by Untappd, a beer social media app. The tv screen features a rotating list of all beers on tap, noting their style, location of brewery, ABV, IBU, and name. Their screen moves too fast to really ready it, but you can go up to the bar for a closer look.

Not only does the Hoppy Taco have a variety of beers, they have….tacos! Good guess! They feature “chips y dip”, street tacos, nachos, quesadillas, tacos, tortas and salads. The best part? Nothing is over 10$! It’s so cheap! Its a great spot for loading up on cheap food, or just a small snack with your drink if that’s what you need.

my crunchy kick style pollo taco on the right, lydia’s barbacoa and carnitas on the right

Lydia and Sophie both got the street tacos, each featuring a different meat, carnitas, asada steak, and barbacoa. Unfortunately, they only have four meat choices for street tacos, and all are beef or pork. I would love to see some alternative meats (or a veggie version) for the tacos. They both enjoyed their tacos!

I got one pollo taco “kick style,” a soft flour tortilla wrapped around bean dip and a crunchy corn tortilla. This looked like something from Taco Bell, but more elevated. The chicken was spiced well, but overall it was a dry taco. I’m glad I ordered a side of sour cream and I could steal some of Lydia’s salsa verde that came with her tacos to make it a more balanced flavor. The tacos are all topped with tomato, lettuce, cheese and jalapeño relish, but I really didn’t taste the spice. This was a good snack, but not a terribly impressive one. I will be sure to try one of their other menu items, like a torta or a quesadilla next time for a more balanced opinion.

a very pretty spread!

Last but not least – they have a good *hoppy* hour deal. From 4-7 pm Monday through Wednesday, they feature 1.50$ street tacos, 2$ domestic beers, 4$ margaritas, and 5$ well drinks, a great deal for an after work or class meal!

This spot has a great location and a good beer selection and very low prices. They can definitely improve on the quality of the food, some small changes can make the food a little tastier. That being said, the prices of food with the decent beer selection is certainly hitting the right market.

The Bottom Line:

Mediocre (but cheap!) food with a decent beer selection. A good college student spot.
