District Doughnut

Preface: my donut allegiance will always be with Donut Stop in Omaha. However, I am always open to trying new and creative donuts. DC is littered with Dunkin’ Donuts, and after one too many donut holes from Dunks in the Longworth House Office Building, i’m ready to try something new.

We stopped by District Doughnut after a Sunday brunch. Because the joint is so far away, its a nice treat if you’re in the Barracks Row/Navy Yard area. The location is quite small, with only six seats. Instead of a text menu of their flavors, they feature a physical display featuring each donut and its description. The prices are pretty typical for gourmet donuts, ranging from 2.75-3.5$. Its a cute area, but a pretty inconvenient location to grab a donut for breakfast. They also close at 4:00 on weekdays, which is not great for the working public.

I got the Key Lime Pie donut, made of lime-zested dough, filled with key lime curd, topped with a graham cracker strudel and a lime glaze with a teeny lime slice on top. Sounds amazing right? It tasted amazing too. I was one of those people, I had to eat my donut with a knife and a fork because it was so big and rich. The outer parts were a little too bready without the filling, but it was great overall.

My friend Amaraj got the Vanilla Bean Créme Brûlée donut. This was made with their signature dough, filled with créme brûlée custard. The best part is, before serving the donut they took it to the back and caramelized the sugar on top right before it was served, so authentic! The donut was amazing, but very rich. Amaraj was about to abandon the last part of the donut, but don’t worry, I finished it for him.

I loved District Doughnut. Buying individual donuts is a nice treat, they are fresh, not excessively oily and feature creative flavors. Buying a dozen or a half dozen could get expensive here, these are gourmet donuts, not the 3 boxes of Krispy Kreme you buy for a 3rd grader’s birthday at school. However, I highly recommend a visit! I will definitely be back to try more flavors.

The Bottom Line

High-quality fancy donuts, I will be returning again and again!
